    Background:

    • Borderline personality disorder (BPD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) are distinct but often comorbid psychiatric conditions.
    • Understanding shared biological markers may elucidate their complex relationship.
    • Electroencephalographic (EEG) sleep studies, particularly rapid eye movement (REM) latency, have been investigated as potential biological markers for depression.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To prospectively investigate the relationship between borderline personality disorder and primary major depression using EEG sleep studies.
    • To compare EEG sleep patterns, specifically REM latency, in prospectively identified borderline patients with those of nonborderline depressed patients and healthy controls.

    Main Methods:

    • Prospective study of 10 consecutively admitted borderline patients (defined by Diagnostic Interview for Borderlines - DIB).

    • REM latency in borderline patients did not correlate with depression severity (Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression).

    Conclusions:

    • EEG sleep data, specifically REM latency, show a convergence with nosological data, supporting a close relationship between borderline personality disorder and affective illness.
    • Shortened REM latency may represent a shared biological vulnerability or feature of both BPD and major depression.
    • Further research is warranted to explore the neurobiological underpinnings of this observed relationship.
