    Area of Science:

    • Psychiatry
    • Pain Research
    • Anxiety Disorders

    Background:

    • Panic disorder is a debilitating anxiety condition.
    • Understanding the relationship between pain perception and anxiety is crucial for treatment.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate differences in pain sensitivity between individuals with panic disorder and healthy controls.
    • To explore the correlation between state anxiety and pain perception in both groups.

    Main Methods:

    • Utilized signal detection analysis to quantify pain sensitivity.
    • Assessed state anxiety using the Spielberger scale.
    • Included 18 patients diagnosed with panic disorder and age/sex-matched controls.

    Main Results:

    • No statistically significant difference in pain sensitivity was observed between panic disorder patients and controls.
    • The relationship between state anxiety and pain perception was contrary in panic disorder patients compared to controls.

    Conclusions:

    • Pain sensitivity does not appear to be altered in panic disorder.
    • Anxiety may modulate pain perception differently in panic disorder patients versus the general population.
