Background:

  • Limited data exists on operative autonomy in vascular surgery.
  • Discrepancies in defining autonomy between trainees and faculty are not well understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify and analyze discrepancies in the definition of operative autonomy between vascular surgery trainees and attending faculty.
  • To evaluate the perceived importance of specific surgical skills for autonomy.

Main Methods:

  • Anonymous surveys were distributed to vascular surgery trainees and faculty across US training programs.
  • Data were collected and analyzed using chi-square statistical analysis.

Main Results:

  • Trainees ranked Case Planning highest, but only 36.1% of faculty expect this skill.
  • Faculty ranked Draping/Positioning highly, yet few expect trainees to perform it.
  • Both groups identified Exposure of Critical Structures as key, but it's expected less than 70% of the time. Trainees reported spending <25% of cases double-scrubbed, despite its perceived importance.

Conclusions:

  • A significant disconnect exists between the skills vascular surgery trainees and faculty consider essential for autonomy.
  • Current expectations for trainee autonomy do not align with the skills trainees believe are necessary for independent practice.
