Flail Chest-II

168
Managing flail chest, a condition characterized by a segment of the chest wall moving independently from the rest of the thoracic cage, requires a comprehensive approach. It includes a thorough assessment of the patient's condition, a diagnostic evaluation to determine the extent of the injury, and the implementation of appropriate medical interventions tailored to the individual's needs.

Area of Science:

  • Anatomy
  • Congenital Anomalies
  • Histopathology

Background:

  • Supernumerary ribs are uncommon congenital anomalies that can occur at various spinal levels.
  • Existing literature documents cervical, intrathoracic, lumbar, and sacral supernumerary ribs, but sternal variations are exceptionally rare.

Observation:

  • A 4-year-old girl presented with a congenital tail-like deformity in the sternal region.
  • Computed tomography revealed an abnormal bone articulating with the sternum, confirmed as a supernumerary rib via histopathology.

Findings:

  • This case represents a unique instance of a supernumerary rib localized to the sternum.
  • The sternal supernumerary rib mimicked a tail-like structure, a presentation not previously described in medical literature.

Implications:

  • This report expands the known spectrum of supernumerary rib presentations.
  • Understanding rare anatomical variations is crucial for accurate diagnosis and management of congenital deformities.
