Summary

Two low-cost body fat measurement methods show good correlation but poor agreement, limiting their interchangeable use for individual tracking. Moderate physical activity in young adults may allow for interchangeable use.

Background:

  • Human body composition assessment is crucial in healthcare, sports, and population studies.
  • Fat percentage is linked to various diseases, yet measurement discrepancies exist between methods.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Evaluate concordance between two accessible, low-cost body fat measurement methods.
  • Determine fat percentage and its relationship with age, sex, BMI, waist circumference, physical activity, and sedentary hours.

Main Methods:

  • Anthropometry (digital adipometer) and Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) were used to estimate fat percentage.
  • Participants (18-59 years) from a university community were assessed.
  • Pearson's correlation, Bland & Altman plots, and Lin's concordance index were calculated.

Main Results:

  • Anthropometry yielded higher fat percentages (30.5-35.0%) than BIA (27.0-29.2%).
  • Both methods showed strong correlation but low concordance (Lin's index < 0.9), except in young adults with moderate activity (0.95).

Conclusions:

  • Doubly indirect methods for fat percentage measurement exhibit strong correlation but poor concordance, advising against interchangeable use for individual case follow-up.
  • In young adults with moderate physical activity, either anthropometry or BIA may be suitable for tracking body fat.
