Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the role of spatial attention in age-related visual search deficits.
  • To examine how central vision occlusion affects visual search performance in younger and older adults.
  • To determine the impact of target eccentricity on search times and eye movements across age groups.

Main Methods:

  • 18 younger and 16 older adults participated in pop-out and serial visual search tasks.
  • Gaze-contingent artificial central scotomas (3°, 5°, 7° diameter) were used to occlude central vision.
  • Search times and eye movements were recorded to assess performance and attentional allocation.

Main Results:

  • Older adults showed a greater performance decline with increasing target eccentricity and central scotoma size during pop-out search.
  • In serial search, older adults consistently had longer search times, irrespective of eccentricity or scotoma size.
  • Increased search times in older adults were linked to difficulties in processing complex symbols and binding features, suggesting reduced simultaneous visual processing capacity.

Conclusions:

  • Age-related visual search impairments may stem from reduced attentional resources for simultaneous processing and spatial distribution.
  • Findings suggest potential age-related decline in dorsal visual stream functioning, impacting visual attention and feature binding.
