Analysis of Population Pharmacokinetic Data01:12

Analysis of Population Pharmacokinetic Data

254
Analysis of population pharmacokinetic data involves studying the behavior of drugs within diverse populations to understand their pharmacokinetic parameters. Traditional pharmacokinetic methods typically involve collecting samples from a few individuals and estimating these parameters. While these methods are commonly used, they have limitations in capturing the variability in drug response among individuals or heterogeneous populations. Population pharmacokinetics is employed to address these...

Issues And Trends In Healthcare Delivery System

5.6K
The issues and trends in healthcare delivery are constantly changing. The COVID-19 pandemic is one recent issue that wreaked havoc on healthcare systems, causing a shortage of healthcare workers, high demand for medicines and supplies, and increased medical expenditure due to a lack of insurance. Other issues include rising healthcare costs and care fragmentation.
Cost Containment
Payment for healthcare services has historically promoted adoption of costly and often unnecessary or inefficient...

Trends in nursing are multifactorial and associated with changes in society, within the nursing profession, and in other professions. Notably, telehealth and remote nursing contribute to successful healthcare delivery for numerous patients and help reduce stress for nurses due to nursing shortages. Nurses can reach patients, monitor their conditions, and interact with them using computers, audio, visual accessories, and telephones—for example, remote patient monitoring systems. Likewise,...

Nonlinear Pharmacokinetics: Overview01:19

Nonlinear Pharmacokinetics: Overview

361
Nonlinear or dose-dependent pharmacokinetics is a phenomenon that occurs when the pharmacokinetic parameters of certain drugs deviate from linear pharmacokinetics at higher doses. These drugs do not follow the expected first-order kinetics, where the rate of drug elimination is directly proportional to the drug concentration. Instead, they exhibit a nonlinear relationship, which can be attributed to several factors.
Nonlinearity can arise due to the saturation of plasma protein-binding or...

Biopharmaceutics and Pharmacokinetics: Overview

2.0K
Understanding drugs, drug products, and their performance in pharmaceutical science is pivotal. Drugs, whether simple molecules or complex compounds, are designed to interact with the body's biological systems to diagnose, treat, or prevent diseases. Drug products include various delivery systems such as tablets, capsules, injections, and inhalers. The performance of these drug products is gauged by their ability to deliver the active ingredient to the desired site of action at the...

Summary

Advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) show deficits in pharmacogenomic knowledge and skills, leading to low test ordering and guideline use. Training and policy changes are recommended for practice integration.

Area of Science:

  • Nursing Education
  • Pharmacogenomics
  • Clinical Practice

Background:

  • Pharmacogenomic (PGx) testing, guided by Clinical Pharmacogenomic Implementation Consortium (CPIC) guidelines, optimizes medication selection and dosing.
  • PGx implementation aims to enhance drug efficacy and reduce adverse events.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess pharmacogenomic (PGx) curricular content, knowledge, skills, attitudes, and usage among advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs).

Main Methods:

  • An online survey was distributed to assess PGx-related education, self-reported knowledge, skills, attitudes, and clinical usage.
  • Data from 266 APRNs were analyzed to evaluate current PGx integration in practice.

Main Results:

  • Only 48% of APRNs reported pharmacogenomic curricular content in their education, which correlated with familiarity but not knowledge confidence.
  • Pharmacogenomic test ordering was low (29%), with 84% never using CPIC guidelines.
  • A significant barrier identified was not knowing which PGx test to order (48% of those not planning future orders).

Conclusions:

  • Deficits in APRN pharmacogenomic knowledge and skills persist despite academic training, hindering practice integration.
  • Low usage of PGx testing and CPIC guidelines indicates a gap between education and clinical application.
  • Recommendations include curriculum assessment, targeted training, policy changes by the Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education, and continuing education for practicing APRNs.
