Many long-acting reversible contraceptive (LARC) users lack accurate knowledge about their methods and rarely use condoms. Improved patient education on LARC longevity and combined contraceptive methods is needed.
Area of Science:
- Reproductive Health
- Contraception
- Public Health
Background:
- Long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs) are highly effective methods.
- Understanding user knowledge and behaviors is crucial for effective family planning.
- Previous research indicates gaps in contraceptive knowledge and practice.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess knowledge regarding LARC longevity among users.
- To examine patient-provider interactions concerning LARC use and removal timing.
- To determine the prevalence of consistent condom use among LARC users.
Main Methods:
- Utilized data from the 2018 National Survey of Sexual Health and Behavior.
- Analyzed responses from 1,451 sexually active women aged 14-49.
- Examined self-reported data on LARC use (intrauterine devices, implants), knowledge, and condom use.
Main Results:
- 11.2% of women used intrauterine devices; 3.1% used implants.
- 19-26% of LARC users inaccurately reported method longevity.
- 30% relied on providers for intrauterine device removal timing; only 6.1% consistently used condoms.
Conclusions:
- Significant knowledge gaps exist regarding LARC longevity and management.
- Patient-provider communication about LARC duration and removal needs enhancement.
- Combined contraceptive strategies, including consistent condom use, require further emphasis.
