Social Facilitation01:04

Social Facilitation

32.0K
Not all intergroup interactions lead to negative outcomes. Sometimes, being in a group situation can improve performance. Social facilitation occurs when an individual performs better when an audience is watching than when the individual performs the behavior alone. This typically occurs when people are performing a task for which they are skilled.

Coping Strategies: Emotion Focused

73
Emotion-focused coping refers to a set of strategies aimed at managing the emotional impact of stressors, rather than directly addressing their causes. This approach involves altering one's emotional response to stressful situations to reduce their psychological effects. For example, individuals might talk with a friend or engage in activities like journaling to express their feelings. Such actions can help achieve emotional clarity or release, providing the psychological stability needed...

The disease often manifests as a painless mass in the testicles, sometimes accompanied by a sensation of heaviness or a dull ache.
Prostate disorders are another major concern. These conditions can impair urinary flow due to the prostate's location around the urethra....

Socioemotional Development during Infancy

54
Socio-emotional development in infancy is primarily shaped by early emotional responses and social connections, with temperament playing a central role. Temperament refers to the consistent patterns in an individual's emotional and behavioral responses, observable even in infancy. By examining temperament, researchers can better understand an infant's unique ways of interacting with the world, influencing subsequent personality and socio-emotional growth.

Psychological Responses to Stress01:20

Psychological Responses to Stress

54
Psychological responses to stress encompass the various cognitive and emotional reactions individuals experience when faced with challenging or threatening situations, such as a job loss. Prolonged exposure to stressors can disturb emotional balance, increasing negative emotions (e.g., anxiety and sadness) and diminishing positive emotions (e.g., joy and satisfaction). These persistent emotional shifts are associated with an increased risk of both physical illness and mental health issues, such...

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Sports Science
  • Sexual Health

Background:

  • Emotion regulation is crucial for emotional well-being and can impact sexual functioning.
  • The relationship between emotion regulation difficulties and sexual health in athletes remains under-researched.
  • Athletes may face unique pressures affecting both emotional and sexual health.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate differences in emotion regulation difficulties between athletes with and without sexual difficulties.
  • To explore gender-specific patterns in emotion regulation and sexual functioning among athletes.
  • To highlight the role of emotion regulation in the sexual health of sports practitioners.

Main Methods:

  • A web-survey was administered to 174 athletes (64 women, 110 men).
  • Participants completed questionnaires on sociodemographics, emotion regulation difficulties (DERS-SF), and sexual functioning (FSFI/IIEF).
  • Statistical analysis compared emotion regulation profiles based on the presence of sexual difficulties.

Main Results:

  • Over half of the women (53.1%) and over a third of the men (35.1%) reported sexual or erectile difficulties, respectively.
  • Women with sexual difficulties exhibited greater challenges in goal-directed behavior.
  • Men with erectile difficulties showed poorer emotional awareness, clarity, goal-directed behavior, impulse control, and higher nonacceptance of emotions.

Conclusions:

  • Difficulties in emotion regulation are significantly associated with sexual difficulties in both male and female athletes.
  • Targeting emotion regulation strategies may be beneficial for enhancing sexual functioning in sports practitioners.
  • This study underscores the importance of a holistic approach to athlete health, integrating mental and sexual well-being.
