Right hemisphere parkinsonism patients showed more self-reported happiness and left visual neglect than left hemisphere parkinsonism patients. This suggests lateralized emotional processing in Parkinson's disease may involve dopamine pathways.

Background:

Emotional control is lateralized to the right hemisphere.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the hypothesis that dopamine imbalance is associated with depression in Parkinson's disease.
To examine emotional and cognitive differences in patients with left versus right hemisphere parkinsonism.

Main Methods:

Sixteen Parkinson's disease patients with unilateral symptoms were recruited.
Patients underwent neuropsychological testing and mood assessments.
Groups were categorized as left hemisphere parkinsonism (LHP) or right hemisphere parkinsonism (RHP).

No significant differences in cognitive or emotional measures between LHP and RHP groups.
RHP patients reported higher scores on the Present Scale of Cantril.
RHP patients exhibited some neglect of the left visual field compared to LHP patients.

Conclusions:

Right hemisphere involvement in Parkinson's disease may be associated with altered self-reported mood and visuospatial neglect.
Findings suggest lateralization of emotional regulation and its potential disruption in Parkinson's disease.
Further research is needed to clarify the role of dopamine pathways in these lateralized effects.
