Endoscopic Procedures III: Video Capsule Endoscopy

Capsule endoscopy, or wireless or video capsule endoscopy, is a diagnostic procedure for examining the entire gastrointestinal tract. Patients swallow a capsule about the size of a vitamin tablet. The capsule is equipped with a transmitter, a battery, an LED light source, and a color video camera to capture images throughout the gastrointestinal tract. Background:

Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) requires instruments with high dexterity and visualization.
Conventional endoscopes can have limitations in visualizing deep or complex anatomical regions.
Balancing instrument size with camera resolution is a significant challenge in MIS.

Purpose of the Study:

To present a novel camera sheath for MIS instruments.
To introduce an advanced transformable head structure (ATHS) to overcome resolution-size trade-offs.
To improve visualization at the instrument tip during surgical procedures.

Main Methods:

Designed an advanced transformable head structure (ATHS) for the camera sheath.
Developed design solutions to maintain camera-instrument alignment during ATHS transformation.
Integrated the sheath prototype with micro-debrider blades for simulated functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS).

Main Results:

The ATHS design ensured proper alignment between the camera's line of sight and the instrument tip direction.
The prototype successfully accessed and visualized deep sinus regions not observable with conventional endoscopes.
The camera sheath allowed instrument and camera delivery with minimal port size increase.
