1Emerging Researchers & Professionals in Ageing-African Network, Abuja, Nigeria.
Sub-Saharan Africa faces a growing aging population, necessitating prioritized research. This study identifies key opportunities, challenges, and solutions for aging research in the region.
Area of Science:
- Gerontology
- Public Health
- Health Services Research
Background:
- Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is experiencing increased life expectancy and population aging.
- By 2050, an estimated 163 million individuals aged 65+ will reside in SSA.
- Current aging research capacity in SSA is insufficient, highlighting the need for this study.
Purpose of the Study:
- To identify aging research opportunities, challenges, and solutions over the next decade in SSA.
- To prioritize critical aging research areas and methodologies relevant to SSA.
Main Methods:
- An e-Delphi protocol was employed, involving researchers, practitioners, older adults, and caregivers.
- Three rounds of e-Delphi surveys were conducted using a 9-point rating scale.
- Consensus was defined as ≥70% rating an item as high priority and ≤15% as low priority. Data analysis included descriptive statistics, Wilcoxon signed-rank test, and content analysis.
Main Results:
- The study aims to identify and prioritize critical areas for aging research in Sub-Saharan Africa.
- Results will guide investment and funding allocation for impactful aging research and practice.
Conclusions:
- Establishing clear aging research and practice priorities is crucial.
- This will optimize research investments and direct public and private funding towards strategically important areas in SSA.
