This study introduces a novel stackable single switch boost converter (SSBC) with a Cuckoo search MPPT controller for solar photovoltaic systems. The proposed system significantly improves power output and efficiency, especially under partial shading conditions.
Area of Science:
- Electrical Engineering
- Renewable Energy Systems
- Power Electronics
Background:
- Traditional boost converters for solar photovoltaic (SPV) systems face limitations including low voltage gain, high ripple, and bulkiness.
- SPV systems exhibit non-linear I-V/P-V characteristics and are susceptible to reduced energy yield from partial shading.
- Conventional maximum power point tracking (MPPT) methods struggle with accuracy, speed, and ripple under partial shading.
Purpose of the Study:
- To propose a stackable single switch boost converter (SSBC) integrated with a Cuckoo search MPPT controller for enhanced SPV system performance.
- To address the limitations of conventional converters and MPPT algorithms in terms of efficiency, power output, and ripple under varying conditions.
- To validate the proposed SSBC and Cuckoo search MPPT controller through experimental verification.
Main Methods:
- Development of a novel stackable single switch boost converter (SSBC) topology.
- Implementation of a Cuckoo search algorithm (CSO) for maximum power point tracking (MPPT).
- Comparative analysis of the proposed SSBC with conventional boost converters and various MPPT algorithms (PSO, FPNA).
Main Results:
- The proposed SSBC with a best MPPT (BMPPT) controller demonstrated ripple-free power output under steady conditions, unlike conventional MPPT with CBC.
- SSBC with BMPPT achieved higher power output compared to SSBC with traditional MPPT (TMPPT).
- The efficiency of the SSBC with BMPPT combination was found to be superior to other tested configurations.
Conclusions:
- The stackable single switch boost converter (SSBC) with a Cuckoo search MPPT controller offers a significant improvement in SPV system performance.
- The proposed system effectively mitigates issues related to partial shading and enhances overall energy yield.
- Experimental validation confirms the practical viability and superior efficiency of the developed prototype.
