Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition marked by persistent deficits in social communication and interaction alongside restrictive and repetitive behaviors or interests. ASD is sometimes accompanied by intellectual impairment.
These core symptoms manifest differently among individuals, ranging from mild to severe. The disorder's complexity extends beyond its clinical presentation, encompassing a diverse range of biological, cognitive, and sociocultural influences.

Summary

This pilot study adapted an intervention for Spanish-speaking caregivers of children with autism, improving their use of language strategies. The intervention showed positive effects on child communication and caregiver strategy generalization.

Background:

Early intervention is crucial for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
Culturally and linguistically adapted interventions are needed for diverse populations.
Naturalistic developmental behavioral interventions (NDBI) show promise for improving communication in young children with ASD.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate an adapted, collaborative intervention model for Latina Spanish-speaking caregivers of children with ASD.
To assess the use of Enhanced Milieu Teaching (EMT) en Español Para Autismo strategies by caregivers.
To examine child communication outcomes and caregiver generalization of strategies.

Main Methods:

A multiple baseline single-case design was used across two dyads.
Intervention involved systematic teaching of EMT strategies with aided language input using speech-generating devices.
Intervention was individualized through family interviews and direct therapist-child sessions.

Main Results:

A strong functional relation was found for one dyad between the intervention and caregiver strategy use.
Children demonstrated increased quantity and diversity of communication.
Caregivers generalized most strategies and found the intervention socially valid.

Conclusions:

The adapted intervention model shows potential for effectively supporting Latino Spanish-speaking families.
Individualization and cultural adaptation are key components for NDBI in diverse populations.
Further research is warranted to confirm findings in larger samples.
