Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is more effective and better tolerated than lactulose for treating functional constipation in Saudi children. Compliance with treatment is key to a positive clinical response in pediatric functional constipation management.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Gastroenterology
- Clinical Pharmacology
Background:
- Functional constipation (FC) is prevalent in children.
- Limited data exists on FC clinical characteristics in Saudi pediatric populations.
Purpose of the Study:
- To delineate the clinical profile of functional constipation in Saudi children.
- To compare the efficacy and tolerability of polyethylene glycol (PEG) versus lactulose for FC management.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective study including 370 Saudi children diagnosed with FC (Rome IV criteria).
- Data on demographics, clinical features, and treatment response were collected.
- Statistical analysis used descriptive statistics and Pearson's chi-squared test.
Main Results:
- The median age of onset was 4 years; 14% were under one year old.
- Abdominal pain was the most frequent associated symptom (44%).
- Polyethylene glycol (PEG) demonstrated significantly better tolerability (P=.0008) and effectiveness (P<.0001) compared to lactulose.
Conclusions:
- Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is recommended as the first-line treatment for functional constipation in Saudi children.
- Treatment compliance emerged as the sole significant predictor of clinical response.
- Further prospective research is warranted to explore non-compliance factors.
