Adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) experience more job burnout due to executive function deficits. These deficits, particularly in time management and organization, mediate the link between ADHD and burnout symptoms.
Area of Science:
- Psychiatry
- Occupational Health
- Neuroscience
Background:
- Adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) frequently exhibit executive function deficits.
- These deficits are associated with negative work-related outcomes, including job burnout.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the role of executive function deficits in job burnout among employees with ADHD.
- To examine whether executive function deficits mediate the relationship between ADHD and job burnout.
Main Methods:
- A field study was conducted with 171 employees.
- Data were collected to assess ADHD, executive function deficits, and job burnout.
- Mediation analyses were performed to test the hypothesized model.
Main Results:
- Employees with ADHD reported higher levels of job burnout and executive function deficits compared to those without ADHD.
- Executive function deficits significantly mediated the relationship between ADHD and job burnout.
- Specific executive functions, namely self-management of time and self-organization/problem-solving, were identified as key mediators.
Conclusions:
- Executive function deficits play a crucial role in the heightened vulnerability of employees with ADHD to job burnout.
- Interventions targeting self-management of time and self-organization/problem-solving may help mitigate burnout in this population.
- Findings underscore the importance of recognizing ADHD in employees and addressing associated executive function challenges to prevent job burnout.
