Blind Procedures02:07

Blind Procedures

Ideally, the people who observe and record the children’s behavior are unaware of who was assigned to the experimental or control group, in order to control for experimenter bias. Experimenter bias refers to the possibility that a researcher’s expectations might skew the results of the study. Remember, conducting an experiment requires a lot of planning, and the people involved in the research project have a vested interest in supporting their hypotheses. If the observers knew which child was...
Blinding01:11

Blinding

Blinding is a commonly used method of not telling participants which treatment a subject is receiving. Blinding is a critical part of a randomized control trial or RCT. It reduces the bias that affects the results. In an RCT, blinding is used in the form of a placebo. A placebo effect occurs when untreated subjects falsely believe they have received the treatment and report improved symptoms. A placebo or a dummy treatment is administered to subjects to negate the bias caused by such an effect.
Open Angle Glaucoma: Treatment01:27

Open Angle Glaucoma: Treatment

In open-angle glaucoma, the iridocorneal angle remains open, but the trabecular meshwork becomes stiff, slowing down the outflow of aqueous humor. This causes a buildup of aqueous humor in the anterior chamber, leading to a sudden increase in intraocular pressure. The treatment for open-angle glaucoma focuses on reducing the elevated intraocular pressure by either decreasing the secretion of aqueous humor or increasing its outflow.
Drugs such as carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, α2- and...
Angle Closure Glaucoma: Treatment01:28

Angle Closure Glaucoma: Treatment

Angle-closure glaucoma, or closed-angle glaucoma, is an eye condition where the iris bulges out and blocks the iridocorneal angle, resulting in a buildup of aqueous humor and increased intraocular pressure. Immediate medical attention is necessary due to the sudden onset of symptoms. The treatment for angle-closure glaucoma includes short-term and long-term approaches. Short-term treatment involves using eye drops like pilocarpine to lower intraocular pressure by increasing aqueous humor...

Area of Science:

  • Integrative Medicine
  • Urology
  • Traditional Chinese Medicine

Background:

  • Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a common condition affecting men's health.
  • Current treatments for ED have limitations and potential side effects.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the clinical efficacy of acupuncture in treating ED.
  • To compare acupuncture with Western medication (sildenafil) for ED treatment.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized controlled trial involving 64 ED patients.
  • Acupuncture group received treatment at specific acupoints, while the Western medication group received sildenafil.
  • Outcome measures included the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5) score, anxiety and depression scales, TCM syndrome scores, and serum testosterone levels.

Main Results:

  • Both acupuncture and sildenafil improved IIEF-5 scores, anxiety, depression, and TCM syndrome scores.
  • Acupuncture showed a superior long-term effect on IIEF-5 scores compared to sildenafil.
  • Acupuncture significantly reduced anxiety, depression, and TCM syndrome scores compared to sildenafil.

Conclusions:

  • Acupuncture is an effective treatment for improving erectile function, anxiety, and depression in ED patients.
  • Acupuncture offers a sustained therapeutic advantage over Western medication for ED.
