A new rehabilitation program, capability care for persons with neuromuscular diseases (NMD), has been developed. This multidisciplinary approach focuses on enhancing well-being by supporting existing and alternative functionings.
Area of Science:
- Rehabilitation Medicine
- Health Sciences
- Disability Studies
Background:
- Neuromuscular diseases (NMD) require specialized rehabilitation interventions.
- Existing rehabilitation models may not fully address the complex needs and well-being of individuals with NMD.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop a multidisciplinary outpatient rehabilitation intervention for people with NMD.
- To base the intervention on the capability approach, termed 'capability care'.
Main Methods:
- An iterative intervention development process was employed.
- The process included a design phase (theoretical insights, group discussions) and a refine phase (stakeholder input).
Main Results:
- 'Capability care' was developed for NMD rehabilitation.
- The intervention facilitates existing functionings (beings and doings) and explores alternative functionings to enhance well-being.
- Preparation materials and guiding tools were created for patients and healthcare professionals.
Conclusions:
- A healthcare intervention based on the capability approach is feasible.
- The study encourages the adoption of capability care in NMD rehabilitation and its development in other medical fields.
