Background:

  • Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) are the most common mesenchymal tumors of the gastrointestinal tract.
  • Accurate assessment of GIST aggressiveness is crucial for patient management and prognosis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To characterize computed tomography (CT) enterography features of small bowel GIST.
  • To determine the association between CT enterography findings and pathological aggressiveness of small bowel GIST.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of CT enterography images from 30 patients with histologically confirmed small bowel GIST.
  • Evaluation of various tumor characteristics including size, location, border, enhancement, necrosis, ulceration, metastasis, and draining vein.
  • Statistical analysis using chi-squared test, Fisher exact test, and Spearman correlation to assess relationships between imaging features and pathological aggressiveness.

Main Results:

  • Tumor size showed significant differences across different risk levels (P < 0.001).
  • Necrosis, ulceration, tumor boundary, drainage vein, and intratumoral gas demonstrated statistically significant differences (P < 0.05).
  • Tumor size correlated negatively with enhancement type and clear tumor boundary, and positively with necrosis, ulceration, drainage vein, intratumoral gas, liver, and peritoneal metastasis.

Conclusions:

  • Certain CT enterography imaging features are associated with the pathological aggressiveness of small bowel GIST.
  • These imaging features may aid in predicting the risk level and guiding clinical decisions for patients with small bowel GIST.
