Summary

Semen DNA fragmentation (SDF) is negatively correlated with sperm viability and motility. Abnormal sperm parameters increase the likelihood of high DNA fragmentation, aiding in sperm selection for assisted reproduction.

Area of Science:

  • Reproductive Medicine
  • Andrology
  • Spermatozoa Biology

Background:

  • Conventional semen parameters are standard for male fertility assessment.
  • The clinical utility of assessing sperm DNA damage remains debated.
  • Sperm DNA fragmentation (SDF) is an emerging marker in male infertility.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the correlation between conventional semen parameters and sperm DNA damage.
  • To determine if conventional parameters can predict high DNA fragmentation.
  • To evaluate the utility of semen parameters in sperm selection for assisted reproduction.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 11,339 semen samples.
  • Assessment of DNA fragmentation index (DFI) and conventional semen parameters.
  • Statistical correlation analysis and multivariate logistic regression.

Main Results:

  • Significant negative correlations found between DFI and sperm viability (r=-0.514) and progressive motility (r=-0.512).
  • Higher DFI levels were associated with a lower percentage of normal conventional sperm parameters.
  • Abnormal conventional sperm parameters correlated with increased likelihood of high DFI (>30%).

Conclusions:

  • Abnormal semen parameters may indicate a higher risk of sperm DNA fragmentation.
  • Conventional semen parameters can serve as potential indicators of SDF.
  • These findings can aid in selecting sperm for assisted reproductive technologies.
