Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) is a structured, time-limited therapeutic approach initially developed to treat depression. It integrates key concepts from psychodynamic, humanistic, and cognitive-behavioral therapies, making it a uniquely eclectic framework. The therapy is rooted in the interpersonal theories of Adolph Meyer and Harry Stack Sullivan, as well as John Bowlby's attachment theory, and focuses on the interplay between interpersonal relationships and emotional well-being.

Self-Evaluation: Self-Enhancement and Self-Verification

5.2K
Social psychologists have documented that feeling good about ourselves and maintaining positive self-esteem is a powerful motivator of human behavior (Tavris & Aronson, 2008). In the United States, members of the predominant culture typically think very highly of themselves and view themselves as good people who are above average on many desirable traits (Ehrlinger, Gilovich, & Ross, 2005). Often, our behavior, attitudes, and beliefs are affected when we experience a threat to our...

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Sociology
  • Economics

Background:

  • Self-perceived interpersonal problems significantly hinder labor market access, job attainment, and retention.
  • Individuals outside the labor market experience heightened distress due to employment challenges.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare self-perceived interpersonal problems in long-term unemployed individuals undergoing vocational rehabilitation with the general population.
  • To assess changes in self-perceived interpersonal problems among participants in vocational rehabilitation programs (VRPs).

Main Methods:

  • A comparative study involving 220 long-term unemployed individuals in VRPs and a general population sample.
  • Utilized the Inventory of Interpersonal Problems (IIP) to measure self-perceived interpersonal difficulties.
  • Assessed changes in interpersonal problems over a one-year participation in VRPs.

Main Results:

  • Long-term unemployed individuals reported significantly higher levels of interpersonal problems compared to the general population.
  • Specific areas of difficulty included feeling cold/distanced, socially inhibited, vindictive/self-centered, and non-assertive.
  • No significant reduction in self-perceived interpersonal problems was observed after one year in VRPs.

Conclusions:

  • Findings suggest that interventions targeting long-term unemployed individuals should address interpersonal difficulties to enhance employability and well-being.
  • The results highlight the interplay of social and individual factors, with potential difficulties in adapting to a changing job market.
  • Interventions may need to be tailored to address specific interpersonal deficits and the challenges of labor market integration.
