Area of Science:

  • Integrative Medicine
  • Dermatology
  • Traditional Chinese Medicine

Background:

  • Plaque psoriasis (PP) is a chronic inflammatory skin condition.
  • Current treatments for PP have limitations and potential side effects.
  • Fire acupuncture (FA) is an alternative therapy with potential benefits for skin conditions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the clinical efficacy of fire acupuncture (FA) for plaque psoriasis (PP).
  • To identify suitable syndrome types for FA treatment in PP patients.
  • To assess the impact of FA on lesion recovery and symptom severity.

Main Methods:

  • Eight patients with PP (aged 18-60) received weekly FA treatments.
  • Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI), visual analog scale (VAS), and pruritus were assessed at baseline, weeks 2, 4, 8, and 12.
  • Dermoscopy was utilized for lesion assessment.

Main Results:

  • All patients reported reduced pruritus after the first FA session.
  • Visible lesion reduction occurred within two weeks of treatment.
  • Significant improvement was observed in most patients by week 8, with some severe cases achieving effective results.

Conclusions:

  • Fire acupuncture demonstrates significant efficacy in controlling PP lesion development.
  • FA effectively alleviates PP symptoms, including pruritus.
  • FA may aid in preventing psoriasis recurrence and accelerating skin lesion recovery.
