In childhood absence epilepsy (CAE), early electroencephalography (EEG) findings often show focal maximal electronegativity, not just generalized discharges. This suggests localized brain activity may contribute to generalized absence seizures.

Background:

  • Childhood absence epilepsy (CAE) typically presents with generalized 3 Hz spike-and-wave discharges (SWD) on electroencephalography (EEG).
  • Focal interictal discharges have been noted in a subset of CAE patients, but their early characteristics are less understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the amplitude and location of maximal electronegativity within the first second of interictal 3 Hz SWD in drug-naïve pediatric patients with CAE.
  • To identify if focal brain areas contribute to the onset of generalized SWD in CAE.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of EEG records from 11 drug-naïve children with CAE.
  • Evaluation of 112 instances of 3 Hz SWD by child neurologists and a machine-learning model.
