This study compared two trifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs), finding both offer excellent visual outcomes and patient satisfaction. The Acriva Trinova IOL showed a slight advantage in intermediate vision at 80 cm.
Area of Science:
- Ophthalmology
- Biomedical Engineering
- Optics
Background:
- Cataract surgery is a common procedure to restore vision.
- Trifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) offer improved visual function by providing clear vision at multiple distances.
- Evaluating new IOL designs is crucial for enhancing patient outcomes.
Purpose of the Study:
- To compare the clinical results of a novel sinusoidal trifocal IOL (Acriva Trinova) with a traditional trifocal IOL (Acrysof IQ PanOptix).
- To assess visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, patient satisfaction, and photic phenomena after bilateral IOL implantation.
Main Methods:
- Prospective study involving 79 patients undergoing cataract surgery with bilateral implantation of either Acriva Trinova or Acrysof IQ PanOptix IOLs.
- Evaluated visual and refractive outcomes, contrast sensitivity, and defocus curves at 3 months post-surgery.
- Assessed patient satisfaction and incidence of photic phenomena.
Main Results:
- No significant differences in distance, intermediate (60 cm), or near visual acuities between the two IOL groups.
- The Acriva Trinova group demonstrated significantly better intermediate visual acuity at 80 cm (p<0.05).
- Both IOLs provided good contrast sensitivity and a wide range of intermediate vision; patient recommendation rates were high for both.
Conclusions:
- Both the Acriva Trinova and Acrysof IQ PanOptix trifocal IOLs deliver satisfactory visual quality and high patient satisfaction.
- The Acriva Trinova IOL may offer an advantage in specific intermediate visual tasks.
