Laparoscopic surgery successfully treated paraprostatic pseudocysts in two dogs, even a giant cyst causing anuria. This minimally invasive approach offers a viable option for canine prostatic cysts.
Area of Science:
- Veterinary Surgery
- Canine Urology
- Minimally Invasive Procedures
Background:
- Paraprostatic cysts are rare cystic masses near the prostate gland in dogs.
- Diagnosis can be challenging, often requiring advanced imaging techniques.
- Surgical intervention is typically necessary for symptomatic cases.
Observation:
- Two intact male dogs presented with severe urinary and systemic symptoms, including hematuria, prostatomegaly, anuria, lethargy, and abdominal mass.
- Comprehensive presurgical evaluations included physical exams, blood work, radiography, ultrasonography, CT, and MRI.
- Initial diagnosis of paraprostatic cyst was confirmed as pseudocysts post-surgery.
Findings:
- Laparoscopic exploration and surgery were performed for complete or partial resection of paraprostatic pseudocysts.
- Histopathology confirmed pseudocysts lacking an epithelial lining in both cases.
- Successful laparoscopic treatment was achieved, including for a giant cyst causing anuria.
Implications:
- This study documents the first laparoscopic treatment for extraparenchymal prostatic cysts in dogs.
- Laparoscopy is a feasible and effective surgical option for canine paraprostatic pseudocysts.
- Paraprostatic cysts should be considered in the differential diagnosis for dogs with urinary abnormalities and abdominal masses.
