Summary

Total hip replacement is a successful treatment for cats with hip pain and a missing limb. Even retained joints in amputated limbs can develop degenerative joint disease and require removal.

Background:

  • Degenerative joint disease (DJD) is a common cause of pain and mobility issues in cats.
  • Hip joint replacement is an established treatment for coxofemoral DJD in various animal species.
  • Cats with limb amputations may present unique challenges for managing orthopedic conditions.

Observation:

  • A 10-year-old domestic shorthair cat with a history of contralateral pelvic limb amputation was diagnosed with coxofemoral DJD.
  • The cat underwent a total hip replacement procedure for the affected joint.
  • The contralateral coxofemoral joint, which was retained after the previous amputation, subsequently developed DJD and caused pain.

Findings:

  • The total hip replacement in the cat resulted in a favorable long-term outcome with no recorded complications.
  • The retained coxofemoral joint in the amputated limb became a source of pain due to DJD development.
  • Excision of the painful contralateral coxofemoral joint provided relief for the cat.

Implications:

  • Total hip replacement is a viable and effective surgical option for managing coxofemoral DJD in cats, even those with previous limb amputations.
  • Retained joints in amputated limbs are susceptible to developing osteoarthritis and can become a significant source of pain.
  • This case highlights the importance of monitoring all remaining joints for signs of degenerative disease, regardless of limb status.
