Statistical Methods for Analyzing Epidemiological Data01:25

Statistical Methods for Analyzing Epidemiological Data

Epidemiological data primarily involves information on specific populations' occurrence, distribution, and determinants of health and diseases. This data is crucial for understanding disease patterns and impacts, aiding public health decision-making and disease prevention strategies. The analysis of epidemiological data employs various statistical methods to interpret health-related data effectively. Here are some commonly used methods:
Steps in Outbreak Investigation01:18

Steps in Outbreak Investigation

In the ever-evolving field of public health, statistical analysis serves as a cornerstone for understanding and managing disease outbreaks. By leveraging various statistical tools, health professionals can predict potential outbreaks, analyze ongoing situations, and devise effective responses to mitigate impact. For that to happen, there are a few possible stages of the analysis:
Interpreting Run Charts01:25

Interpreting Run Charts

Run charts, essentially line graphs plotted over time, serve as fundamental yet effective tools for process analysis. They chronicle data sequentially, facilitating the identification of trends, shifts, or cyclical movements. This graphical representation is instrumental in determining whether a process is stable or exhibits signs of potential instability indicative of special cause variation. In the healthcare domain, run charts depict infection rates over time, enabling hospitals to monitor...
Investigation of Disease Outbreaks01:23

Investigation of Disease Outbreaks

Multistate foodborne outbreaks pose significant public health risks and require meticulous investigation to identify sources and implement control measures. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) utilizes a dynamic seven-step process for these investigations, integrating data from laboratories, interviews, and environmental assessments to protect public health.Outbreak Detection: The detection of multistate outbreaks typically begins with PulseNet, the CDC's national laboratory...
Plague01:24

Plague

Plague is a highly virulent zoonotic disease caused by Yersinia pestis, a Gram-negative, facultatively anaerobic coccobacillus. This pathogen primarily circulates among rodent populations and is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected fleas. Additional transmission routes include direct contact with infected animal tissue or inhalation of respiratory droplets from individuals with pneumonic plague. These multiple transmission pathways highlight the bacterium’s potential for rapid...

Area of Science:

  • Veterinary Microbiology
  • Antimicrobial Resistance
  • Aquatic Animal Health

Background:

  • Internationally harmonised interpretive criteria are essential for antimicrobial susceptibility testing.
  • Such criteria are currently lacking for the fish pathogen Yersinia ruckeri.
  • Standardized criteria are needed to interpret Y. ruckeri antimicrobial susceptibility data accurately.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To generate data for establishing epidemiological cut-off values for Yersinia ruckeri.
  • To facilitate the development of internationally harmonised interpretive criteria for Y. ruckeri.
  • To support standardized antimicrobial susceptibility testing in aquaculture.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized a standardized disc diffusion method with Mueller Hinton agar at 22°C for 24-28h.
  • Generated inhibition zone data for 4 antimicrobial agents across 3 independent laboratories.
  • Employed statistically based normalised resistance interpretation for data analysis.

Main Results:

  • Calculated epidemiological cut-off values for ampicillin (≥16 mm), florfenicol (≥23 mm), oxytetracycline (≥24 mm), and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (≥30 mm).
  • Demonstrated sufficient data quantity and quality for setting consensus epidemiological cut-off values.
  • Provided a foundation for harmonized antimicrobial susceptibility testing of Y. ruckeri.

Conclusions:

  • The generated data is suitable for establishing internationally harmonised, consensus epidemiological cut-off values for Y. ruckeri.
  • This work addresses a critical gap in antimicrobial resistance surveillance for fish pathogens.
  • Standardized criteria will improve the effective treatment of Yersinia ruckeri infections in fish.
