Rural Health Centers
Rural health centers are specialized care facilities in remote locations with very few medical personnel. The primary care providers who run the centers are mostly Registered Nurse Practitioners. Here, emergency treatment is provided to critically ill or injured patients before they are transferred to the closest hospital. Fortunately, due to advancement in technology, many rural healthcare facilities and professionals have easy access to diagnostic and treatment...

    Area of Science:

    • Correctional Health
    • Mental Health Screening
    • Public Health

    Background:

    • Serious mental illness (SMI) is prevalent in correctional settings, often undetected due to a lack of standardized screening.
    • Undiagnosed SMI in incarcerated individuals increases risks for self-harm, suicide, and victimization or perpetration of violence.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the effectiveness of the Brief Jail Mental Health Screen (BJMHS) for identifying possible SMI in a jail population.
    • To compare the BJMHS with a facility's standard medical questionnaire (SMQ) for SMI detection.

    Main Methods:

    • A quantitative, descriptive study involving 89 incarcerated individuals in a jail setting.
    • Screening was conducted using either the BJMHS or the facility's SMQ.

    Main Results:

    • The BJMHS identified 28% of individuals with possible SMI.
    • The SMQ identified only 3% of individuals with possible SMI.
    • The BJMHS demonstrated superior performance in flagging potential SMI cases compared to the SMQ.

    Conclusions:

    • The BJMHS shows potential superiority for screening SMI in jails.
    • Effective SMI identification improves care and safety for individuals, other inmates, and staff.
    • Study findings led to the adoption of BJMHS in over 250 US correctional facilities.
