Language and Cognition

343
Language serves as a bridge between ideas and communication, influencing how individuals perceive and interact with the world. Psychologists have long debated whether language shapes thought or vice versa. This discussion gained grip with Edward Sapir and Benjamin Lee Whorf in the 1940s, who proposed that language determines thought, a concept known as linguistic determinism. They suggested that the vocabulary and structure of a language influence how its speakers think and perceive reality.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Developmental Psychology
  • Medical Imaging

Background:

  • Dyslexia is a neurodevelopmental disorder impacting reading and spelling accuracy/fluency.
  • Brain imaging studies reveal structural alterations, primarily in the left hemisphere's arcuate fasciculus (AF) and corona radiata (CR).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically review methods for analyzing Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) data in dyslexia research over the past decade.
  • To synthesize findings on brain structural changes associated with dyslexia.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic literature search of PubMed and Scopus, screening 124 articles.
  • Inclusion of 49 articles focusing on dyslexia without comorbidities, with paired evaluation for selection.
  • Analysis of demographic, cognitive, and DTI acquisition/analysis characteristics.

Main Results:

  • Studies predominantly featured English-speaking children with dyslexia, normal non-verbal intelligence, attention, and memory.
  • Deficits were noted in reading tests, rapid automatic naming, and phonological awareness.
  • Consistent structural differences were identified in the left AF across all ages and in the bilateral superior longitudinal fasciculus.

Conclusions:

  • Understanding structural brain changes and neuroadaptations in dyslexia is crucial.
  • This knowledge can inform the development of targeted interventions for individuals with dyslexia.
