Overview of Regeneration and Repair01:19

Overview of Regeneration and Repair

4.0K
Regeneration and repair processes are critical in healing damages caused by injury, disease, and aging. In regeneration, the damaged tissue is entirely replaced with new growth that restores the original architecture and function. In contrast, tissue repair usually results in a fixed tissue architecture involving scar formation. Scars generally do not reestablish tissue function and may also exhibit structural abnormalities at the injury site.

Neurogenesis and Regeneration of Nervous Tissue

767
In the CNS, neurogenesis, the birth of new neurons from stem cells, is limited to the hippocampus in adults. In other regions of the brain and spinal cord, neurogenesis is almost non-existent due to inhibitory influences from neuroglia, especially oligodendrocytes, and the absence of growth-stimulating cues. The myelin produced by oligodendrocytes in the CNS inhibits neuronal regeneration. Furthermore, astrocytes proliferate rapidly after neuronal damage, forming scar tissue that physically...

Stem Cell Therapy for Tissue Regeneration01:21

Stem Cell Therapy for Tissue Regeneration

4.0K
Stem cell therapy is a method used in regenerative medicine to repair and restore function to damaged tissues and organs. Stem cells have the potential to proliferate and differentiate into various tissue types, making them ideal candidates for tissue regeneration. For example, hematopoietic stem cell transplants are commonly used in blood cancer treatment to replenish damaged bone marrow and restore healthy blood cells.

Summary

Osteochondral lesions of the talus (OLT) causing ankle pain often need surgery. For larger OLTs, autologous matrix-induced chondrogenesis shows promising results, with a new all-arthroscopic technique detailed.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedics
  • Sports Medicine
  • Regenerative Medicine

Background:

  • Osteochondral lesions of the talus (OLT) are a common source of chronic ankle pain.
  • Symptomatic OLTs necessitate surgical intervention for pain relief and function restoration.
  • Current treatments for larger OLTs (>107.4 mm²) have less predictable outcomes compared to smaller lesions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the efficacy of autologous matrix-induced chondrogenesis (AMIC) for treating osteochondral lesions of the talus.
  • To describe a standardized all-arthroscopic surgical technique for AMIC.
  • To introduce the Milan-Tel Aviv lesion assessment protocol for OLT management.

Main Methods:

  • Review of existing literature on AMIC for OLT treatment.
  • Detailed description of an all-arthroscopic surgical procedure for AMIC.
  • Explanation of the Milan-Tel Aviv lesion assessment protocol.

Main Results:

  • Autologous matrix-induced chondrogenesis demonstrates satisfactory medium and long-term outcomes for OLTs.
  • The described all-arthroscopic technique aims to standardize OLT treatment.
  • The Milan-Tel Aviv protocol provides a structured approach to assessing OLTs.

Conclusions:

  • AMIC is an effective treatment option for osteochondral lesions of the talus, particularly for larger defects.
  • An all-arthroscopic approach combined with a standardized assessment protocol can optimize surgical results for OLTs.
