Skin Cancer

4.1K
Skin cancer is a type of cancer that occurs when there is an abnormal growth of skin cells, usually triggered by damage to the DNA within the skin cells. It is primarily caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or artificial sources like tanning beds. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer worldwide, and its incidence continues to rise.
Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC): BCC is the most common type of skin cancer, accounting for about 80% of cases. It typically develops in...

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Oncology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Sebaceous gland carcinomas are rare malignant cutaneous adnexal tumors.
  • They predominantly occur in the head and neck region.
  • Muir-Torre syndrome must be considered in diagnosis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the characteristics, prognosis, and management of sebaceous gland carcinomas.
  • To highlight the differences in metastatic potential between periocular and extraocular tumors.
  • To emphasize the importance of complete surgical resection and follow-up.

Main Methods:

  • Literature review and synthesis of existing data on sebaceous gland carcinomas.
  • Analysis of tumor localization, metastatic patterns, and treatment outcomes.
  • Discussion of diagnostic considerations, including Muir-Torre syndrome.

Main Results:

  • Sebaceous gland carcinomas are potentially aggressive with a high recurrence and metastasis rate.
  • Periocular tumors have a higher metastasis rate (up to 15%) than extraocular tumors (up to 2%).
  • Complete micrographically controlled surgery is the primary treatment, with radiotherapy as an option.

Conclusions:

  • Complete resection offers a good prognosis for small, extraocular tumors.
  • Advanced or metastatic cases require individualized, multidisciplinary treatment planning.
  • Close follow-up is essential due to the aggressive nature of these carcinomas.
