Self-Report Tests of Personality01:22

Self-Report Tests of Personality

342
Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Stereotypes, Prejudice, and Discrimination02:55

Stereotypes, Prejudice, and Discrimination

90.2K
Humans are very diverse and although we share many similarities, we also have many differences. The social groups we belong to help form our identities (Tajfel, 1974). These differences may be difficult for some people to reconcile, which may lead to prejudice toward people who are different. Prejudice is a negative attitude and feeling toward an individual based solely on one’s membership in a particular social group (Allport, 1954; Brown, 2010). Prejudice is common against people who...

Reliability and Validity01:29

Reliability and Validity

12.7K
Reliability and validity are two important considerations that must be made with any type of data collection. Reliability refers to the ability to consistently produce a given result. In the context of psychological research, this would mean that any instruments or tools used to collect data do so in consistent, reproducible ways.

Autism Spectrum Disorder01:19

Autism Spectrum Disorder

87
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition marked by persistent deficits in social communication and interaction alongside restrictive and repetitive behaviors or interests. ASD is sometimes accompanied by intellectual impairment.
These core symptoms manifest differently among individuals, ranging from mild to severe. The disorder's complexity extends beyond its clinical presentation, encompassing a diverse range of biological, cognitive, and sociocultural influences.

Attitudes01:54

Attitudes

28.4K
Attitude is our evaluation of a person, an idea, or an object. We have attitudes for many things ranging from products that we might pick up in the supermarket to people around the world to political policies. Typically, attitudes are favorable or unfavorable: positive or negative (Eagly & Chaiken, 1993). And, they have three components: an affective component (feelings), a behavioral component (the effect of the attitude on behavior), and a cognitive component (belief and knowledge;...

Measures of Intelligence01:29

Measures of Intelligence

7.2K
Psychologists measure intelligence by using standardized tests that produce a score known as the intelligence quotient or IQ. To understand IQ tests, it's important to recognize the key principles behind their construction: validity, reliability, and standardization.
Validity refers to how well a test measures what it claims to measure. An intelligence test should accurately assess intelligence rather than another characteristic, like anxiety. Criterion validity is one way to evaluate this;...

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Sociology
  • Disability Studies

Background:

  • Neurodiversity acknowledges the value of diverse brain differences.
  • Societal attitudes significantly impact neurodivergent individuals' daily lives and professional services.
  • Measuring attitudes is crucial for identifying and addressing potential biases.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate a new instrument for measuring attitudes toward neurodiversity.
  • To provide a tool for assessing understanding and acceptance of neurodivergent individuals.

Main Methods:

  • The Neurodiversity Attitudes Questionnaire (NDAQ) was developed through expert and neurodivergent feedback.
  • Systematic evaluation of participant responses and item factor analysis were conducted.
  • Preliminary analysis involved 351 individuals in helping professions.

Main Results:

  • The NDAQ demonstrates reliability and validity in measuring attitudes toward neurodiversity.
  • Participants understood the questionnaire items, indicating good usability.
  • Factor analysis supported a five-factor structure for the NDAQ.

Conclusions:

  • The NDAQ is the first instrument specifically designed to assess broad attitudes toward neurodiversity.
  • This tool can aid in understanding and improving societal acceptance of neurodivergent individuals.
  • Further research is recommended to refine and expand the use of the NDAQ.
