This study developed a new Speech in Noise Sentence Test for Kannada-speaking children. The validated test accurately measures speech comprehension, especially with spatial separation of sound.
Area of Science:
- Audiology
- Speech-Language Pathology
- Pediatric Hearing
Background:
- Assessing speech comprehension in noise is crucial for children.
- Existing tests may not be suitable for all linguistic and cultural groups.
- Kannada-speaking children require a culturally and linguistically appropriate tool.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop and validate a modified Speech in Noise Sentence Test in Kannada.
- To create a reliable tool for assessing speech comprehension in children aged 8-12 years.
- To evaluate the impact of spatial separation on speech understanding.
Main Methods:
- Developed a Kannada Speech in Noise Sentence Test using 120 familiar sentences across four lists.
- Utilized continuous discourse as a distractor presented at varying spatial locations (+90°, -90° azimuth).
- Employed a dynamic signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) adjustment and pilot tested with 60 children (8-12 years).
Main Results:
- Significant improvement in SNR50 scores observed with spatial separation of target and distractor stimuli.
- Age demonstrated a significant effect on spatial separation scores.
- Excellent test-retest reliability was established for the developed test.
Conclusions:
- The developed Kannada Speech in Noise Sentence Test effectively measures spatial separation abilities.
- Normative and psychometric analyses confirmed the reliability and validity of the test.
- This tool provides a reliable method for assessing speech comprehension in pediatric populations.
