Cystic Fibrosis: Pathogenesis01:23

Cystic Fibrosis: Pathogenesis

224
Cystic fibrosis (CF), an autosomal recessive disorder, significantly affects the function of exocrine glands. This genetically inherited disease is characterized by the production of thick and sticky mucus, which can severely affect various organs and systems in the body.
CF is primarily caused by a genetic mutation in a chromosome 7 gene coding for the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) protein. The most common gene mutation leading to CF is the ΔF508 mutation,...

Cystic Fibrosis: Management

157
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is an autosomal recessive disorder that predominantly affects individuals of Northern European descent, occurring at a rate of 1 in 3500. It is caused by a genetic mutation in a gene on chromosome 7, most commonly the ΔF508 mutation, that codes for the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) protein. This results in thicker mucus secretions and obstruction pathologies in multiple organs, including the lungs and sinuses.
Sinus disease and chronic...

Disorders of the Male Reproductive System

Men's health issues are increasingly recognized as significant, with several conditions posing common threats. Among these, testicular cancer is especially prevalent in younger men, particularly those aged 20 to 35 years. The disease often manifests as a painless mass in the testicles, sometimes accompanied by a sensation of heaviness or a dull ache.
Prostate disorders are another major concern. These conditions can impair urinary flow due to the prostate's location around the urethra....

Male Sexual Response: Erection & Ejaculation

Sexual stimulation can take various forms, such as physical touch and visual or auditory cues. When this happens, the parasympathetic reflex in the sacral portion of the spinal cord is activated. This reflex stimulates the release of nitric oxide (NO), which then dilates the arterioles in the penis, increasing blood flow to the erectile tissues - the corpora cavernosa and corpus spongiosum.
The blood filling the erectile tissues compresses the veins, which helps to prevent blood from leaving...

Drugs for Treatment of Constipation-Predominant IBS

160
Pharmacological therapies for IBS-C are designed to alleviate abdominal discomfort and enhance bowel function. In patients with IBS-C, fiber supplements may help soften stools and decrease straining, but may also lead to increased gas production and bloating. Osmotic laxatives like milk of magnesia are frequently used to soften stools and increase stool frequency in IBS-C patients. In addition, two drugs approved for use in severe IBS-C adult cases are linaclotide (Linzess) and lubiprostone...

Infertility in Males01:23

Infertility in Males

260
Male infertility affects millions of couples worldwide, arising from various factors that impact different stages of the reproductive process. An endocrine imbalance resulting from conditions like hypogonadism, Klinefelter syndrome, or pituitary disorders can disrupt hormone levels and reduce sperm production. Testicular defects, such as tumors, cryptorchidism, atrophic testes, abnormal sperm morphology, and low sperm count or motility, may arise due to genetic factors, structural...

Area of Science:

  • Reproductive Health
  • Pulmonology
  • Quality of Life Studies

Background:

  • Sexual dysfunction remains under-researched in cystic fibrosis (CF) patients.
  • Previous studies have not deeply investigated sexual health in adults with CF.
  • This research addresses the gap in understanding sexual dysfunction within the CF population.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of sexual dysfunction in adults with CF.
  • To identify factors associated with sexual dysfunction in this population.
  • To assess the impact of sexual dysfunction on quality of life.

Main Methods:

  • A multicentre study was conducted in Western France involving adults with CF.
  • The International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF5) and Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) questionnaires were used.
  • Quality of life was assessed using the CFQ-R14+ questionnaire.

Main Results:

  • 21% of males and 30% of females reported sexual dysfunction.
  • Lower quality of life scores were observed in males with erectile dysfunction.
  • Faecal incontinence correlated with higher sexual dysfunction in females and more severe erectile dysfunction in males.

Conclusions:

  • Sexual dysfunction affects a significant portion of adults with CF.
  • Addressing faecal incontinence may improve sexual health outcomes.
  • Healthcare teams should be trained to discuss sexual health openly with CF patients.
