Sonohysterography with a Foley catheter accurately measures uterine cavity volume, establishing a normative model. This objective method aids in evaluating treatments for uterine conditions and understanding age and parity influences.
Area of Science:
- Gynecology
- Medical Imaging
- Reproductive Medicine
Background:
- Limited methods exist for evaluating uterine cavity volume.
- Accurate volume measurement is crucial for assessing treatment effectiveness in various uterine conditions.
Purpose of the Study:
- To objectively measure uterine cavity volume using sonohysterography and a Foley catheter.
- To establish a normative model of uterine cavity volume related to age and parity.
Main Methods:
- Sonohysterography with saline infusion was performed on 150 women.
- Uterine cavity volumes were measured and compared to saline volumes from hysterectomies.
- Association between sonohysterography volume and age/parity was analyzed.
Main Results:
- Sonohysterography accurately measured uterine cavity volume, correlating significantly with post-hysterectomy volumes (p=0.001).
- A significant positive association was found between uterine cavity volume and patient age and parity (p≤0.05).
- Using only a Foley catheter balloon without sonohysterography showed no significant association (p=0.13).
Conclusions:
- Sonohysterography with a pediatric Foley catheter provides an objective method for measuring normal uterine cavity volume.
- This technique enhances diagnostic accuracy and management for uterine cavity pathologies.
- The study provides a normative model for uterine cavity volume based on age and parity.
