Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) significantly reduced sympathetic nervous system (SNS) activity in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. This mindfulness training may offer clinical benefits for autonomic function in CKD.
Area of Science:
- Nephrology
- Cardiology
- Psychoneuroimmunology
Background:
- Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is linked to sympathetic nervous system (SNS) overactivation, increasing cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk.
- Limited therapeutic options exist to manage SNS overactivity in CKD patients.
Conclusions:
- Mindfulness training via MBSR effectively reduced sympathetic reactivity during mental stress in CKD patients.
- MBSR is a feasible intervention with potential clinical benefits for autonomic dysfunction in CKD.
- These findings suggest a novel non-pharmacological approach to managing SNS overactivity in CKD.

The Role of Exercise in Stress Management
Regular physical activity is essential for reducing stress and promoting cardiovascular health. Exercise strengthens the heart, enhances blood flow, keeps blood vessels flexible, and helps lower blood pressure, all of which reduce the body's stress response. Research shows that adults who exercise regularly have nearly half the...
