Background:

Nurses play a critical role in managing epidemic diseases.
Assessing clinical nursing competencies during epidemics is essential for effective response.

Purpose of the Study:

To identify and define the necessary clinical competencies for nurses during epidemic situations.
To inform healthcare services and nursing education for future epidemic preparedness.

Main Methods:

Qualitative conventional content analysis.
Semi-structured interviews with 12 nurses actively involved in COVID-19 patient care.
Data analysis followed Graneheim and Lundman's 5-step method.

Main Results:

159 competencies identified from nurse interviews.
Competencies categorized into clinical nursing skills, epidemic knowledge, and soft skills.
11 subcategories emerged from the analysis.

Conclusions:

Nurses need diverse competencies to meet professional expectations during epidemics.
Understanding these competencies aids nursing managers in preparing for future health crises like COVID-19.
