A technique for the difficult peripheral arterial aneurysm.

W E Birkenstock

    The British Journal of Surgery
    |September 1, 1979
    PubMed
    Summary

A novel technique using Foley catheters allows for precise control of aneurysm feeding vessels, even when standard methods fail. This minimally invasive approach offers a safer alternative, preventing damage to surrounding tissues during aneurysm repair.

    Area of Science:

    • Vascular surgery
    • Interventional radiology
    • Aneurysm treatment

    Background:

    • Controlling feeding vessels for aneurysms can be challenging and risk surrounding tissue damage.
    • Standard surgical methods may be hazardous or impossible in certain cases.

    Observation:

    • A new method involves introducing Foley catheters from within the aneurysm into feeding vessels.
    • Catheters are cut distally to their clamped side branch.

    Findings:

    • Dacron grafts can be passed over the prepared catheters and sutured.
    • This technique was successfully used in 3 patients with satisfactory outcomes.

    Implications:

    • Offers a viable alternative for complex aneurysm cases where standard control is difficult.
    • Potentially reduces complications associated with traditional surgical approaches.
    • Improves patient outcomes in challenging vascular interventions.
