This study establishes the first reference standards for serum C-peptide levels in healthy Koreans. These new standards aid clinical diagnostics and endocrine hormone research.
Area of Science:
- Endocrinology
- Clinical Chemistry
- Reference Standards
Background:
- The Korean Endocrine Hormone Reference Standard Data Center (KEHRS DC) has developed reference standards (RSs) for endocrine hormones since 2020.
- This research marks the first establishment of RSs for serum C-peptide in a healthy Korean population.
Purpose of the Study:
- To establish reference standards for serum C-peptide levels in healthy Korean adults.
- To provide a reliable baseline for clinical and research applications involving C-peptide measurements.
Main Methods:
- Recruited healthy Korean adults between May 2021 and September 2023.
- Collected serum samples, with participants choosing between fasting glucose or oral glucose tolerance tests (OGTT).
- Excluded participants with hyperglycemia (glucose ≥100 mg/dL) or high HbA1c (≥5.70%) from C-peptide analysis.
Main Results:
- Analyzed data from 1,050 participants after exclusions.
- Determined mean ± 2 standard deviations and expanded uncertainties for fasting, 30-minute, and 120-minute OGTT C-peptide levels.
- Observed correlations between serum C-peptide levels and obesity, glucose, and HbA1c.
Conclusions:
- The established reference standards for serum C-peptide are valuable for clinical practice and related scientific fields.
- These RSs contribute to accurate endocrine hormone assessment in the Korean population.
