Background:

  • Routine follow-up for FTs is challenging due to diverse placement locations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of a dedicated feeding tube (FT) clinic on patient nutrition.
  • To test the hypothesis that FT clinic enrollment improves nutritional outcomes.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of patients with FTs placed between January 2010 and January 2020.
  • Comparison of serum albumin and body mass index (BMI) before and after FT placement.
  • Analysis of FT duration and clinic participation (minimum 2 visits).

Main Results:

  • Patients in the FT clinic (FTC) showed a significant increase in mean serum albumin (0.42 g/dL) compared to those outside the clinic (nFTC) (-0.07 g/dL).
  • FTC patients experienced a significant increase in BMI (0.38 kg/m²) versus a decrease in nFTC patients (-1.48 kg/m²).
  • FTs were maintained significantly longer in the FTC group (36.5 months) compared to the nFTC group (7.0 months).

Conclusions:

  • Management in a dedicated FT clinic leads to improved serum albumin and BMI.
  • Dedicated FT clinics help patients maintain their feeding tubes for longer durations.
  • Enrollment in an FT clinic is recommended to optimize nutrition and prevent weight loss in patients requiring FTs.
