Effect of Mirabegron in Men With Overactive Bladder and Erectile Dysfunction: A Prospective Observational Study
1Department of Urology, Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences, Ranchi, IND.
Mirabegron shows promise in treating men with mild to moderate erectile dysfunction (ED) and overactive bladder (OAB). While effective for OAB symptoms up to eight weeks, its impact on ED diminishes over time.
Area of Science:
- Urology
- Pharmacology
Background:
- Erectile dysfunction (ED) and overactive bladder (OAB) significantly impact male quality of life.
- Mirabegron, a beta-3 adrenergic agonist, is primarily used for OAB treatment.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the efficacy of mirabegron in managing symptoms of both ED and OAB in men.
- To assess the impact of mirabegron on International Index of Erectile Dysfunction-5 (IIEF-5) and Overactive Bladder Questionnaire (OAB-q) scores.
Main Methods:
- A prospective, observational study involving 250 male patients with mild to moderate ED and OAB symptoms.
- Patients were assessed using IIEF-5 and OAB-q scores at baseline and at 2, 4, 8, and 12 weeks.
- Mirabegron's impact on ED and OAB symptoms was evaluated over the study duration.
Main Results:
- Significant improvements in IIEF-5 scores were observed, with 86.25% and 91.25% of patients showing improvement at 4 and 8 weeks, respectively.
- OAB-q scores decreased from a baseline of 17.4 ± 5.5 to 13.1 ± 4.3 at 4 weeks and 12.8 ± 4.2 at 8 weeks.
- Mirabegron was well-tolerated, with no reported adverse events significantly hindering study progress.
Conclusions:
- Mirabegron demonstrates a beneficial effect on controlling OAB symptoms in men with mild to moderate ED.
- The therapeutic effects on OAB symptoms were most pronounced up to eight weeks and subsequently declined.
- Mirabegron exhibited a favorable safety profile and good tolerability in the studied patient population.
