D E Shoch, E L Stock, A E Schwartz

    American Journal of Ophthalmology
    |July 15, 1985

    Summary

Stromal keratitis can complicate recurrent corneal erosion, often linked to anterior membrane dystrophy. Early identification of these corneal changes aids diagnosis and treatment.

    Area of Science:

    • Ophthalmology
    • Corneal Diseases
    • Microbiology

    Background:

    • Recurrent corneal erosion is common in anterior membrane dystrophies.
    • Stromal keratitis is a potential complication requiring investigation.

    Observation:

    • Five patients with recurrent corneal erosion also developed stromal keratitis.
    • Microbiologic workup revealed sterile lesions in three patients.

    Findings:

    • Stromal keratitis is a recognized complication of non-traumatic recurrent erosion syndrome.
    • This syndrome is frequently associated with anterior membrane dystrophy.

    Implications:

    • Recognizing stromal keratitis as a complication of recurrent erosion is crucial.
    • Identifying anterior membrane changes aids in diagnosis and treatment of affected eyes.
