    Squamomastoid pneumatization in temporal bones follows a normal distribution and shows no correlation with patient age, gender, or ear laterality. This study provides insights into normal temporal bone pneumatization patterns using computed tomography (CT) imaging.

    Background:

    • Pneumatization of the temporal bone is a complex anatomical process.
    • Previous studies have yielded controversial findings regarding factors influencing temporal bone pneumatization.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the pneumatization of normal temporal bones using computed tomography (CT).
    • To establish a CT index for quantifying temporal bone pneumatization.
    • To investigate the correlation of squamomastoid pneumatization with age, gender, and laterality.

    Main Methods:

    • Computed tomography (CT) scans of 141 temporal bones from 100 patients were analyzed.
    • Temporal bones with sclerotic squamomastoid findings were excluded.
    • A CT index was developed based on pneumatized area and cell count in representative sections.
