    Background:

    • Atopic individuals often exhibit allergies to common domestic animal danders.
    • Exposure to wild animals, such as deer and elk, can occur through hunting and other recreational activities.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the potential for allergic reactions to deer and elk allergens in atopic individuals.
    • To determine if IgE antibodies are involved in reactions to deer and elk allergens.

    Main Methods:

    • Studied 15 atopic individuals with known allergies to domestic animals.
    • Performed skin tests and measured IgE antibody levels to deer and elk allergens (hair/dander, serum, urine).
    • Utilized RAST inhibition experiments to identify specific allergens.

    Main Results:

    • All 15 participants were reactive to domestic animal danders.
    • 12 patients showed elevated IgE to deer hair/dander; 6 showed elevated IgE to elk hair/dander.
    • IgE antibodies were directed to common allergens found in deer/elk hair/dander, serum, and urine, indicating cross-reactivity.

    Conclusions:

    • Atopic individuals sensitive to domestic animals can develop IgE-mediated allergic reactions to deer and elk allergens.
    • Exposure through hunting or other contact can trigger these reactions.
    • Allergens common to domestic and wild animals are implicated in cross-reactive allergies.
