Risk factors for middle ear cholesteatoma surgery based on Korean population data.

Background:

• Population-based studies on middle ear cholesteatoma surgery risk factors are scarce.
• This study addresses the lack of data by investigating risk factors in adults using Korean national health data.

Purpose of the Study:

• To identify sociodemographic and medical history risk factors for middle ear cholesteatoma surgery in adults.
• To analyze population-based data to understand the epidemiology of cholesteatoma surgery.

• Inclusion criteria: patients aged 20+ undergoing mastoidectomy for cholesteatoma.

• Significant risk factors included age (40-59 years) and residence in metropolitan or smaller urban areas.

Conclusions:

• Age and geographic location (urban vs. rural) are associated with middle ear cholesteatoma surgery in adults.
• No association was found between allergic diseases or chronic sinusitis and the occurrence of cholesteatoma surgery in this adult population.
