    Summary

    Visual suppression of the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) was studied. The post-suppression VOR showed reduced gain and altered phase, with rapid and slow components contributing to suppression dissipation.

    Background:

    • The vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) stabilizes gaze during head movements.
    • Visual input plays a crucial role in modulating VOR function.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the characteristics of the VOR after intermittent visual suppression.
    • To quantify the recovery of VOR function in darkness following visual suppression.

    Main Methods:

    • Intermittent visual suppression of VOR using a head-fixed target during whole-body oscillation.
    • Stimulus-locked averaging of eye movements during dark intervals to estimate post-suppression VOR.
    • Analysis of VOR gain and phase during and after suppression.

    Main Results:

    • Post-suppression VOR gain was reduced (26-50%) compared to normal VOR in darkness.
    • Phase lead of the post-suppression VOR equaled or exceeded normal VOR phase lead.

    • Visual suppression of VOR dissipates in darkness through distinct rapid and slow components.
    • The slow component, possibly non-visual, contributed more significantly to suppression than the rapid, visual component.
    • These findings elucidate the dynamic nature of VOR adaptation to visual input.
