Imaging Studies III: Gastrointestinal Motility Studies and Virtual Colonoscopy

80
This lesson explores three gastrointestinal imaging techniques: radionuclide testing, colonic transit studies, and virtual colonoscopy.
Radionuclide Testing
Radionuclide testing is a sophisticated medical technique for assessing gastrointestinal motility. It focuses on gastric emptying and colonic transit time. Radioactive markers track the movement of food through the digestive system, providing insights into gastrointestinal disorders.
In gastric emptying studies, a meal's liquid and...

Endoscopic Procedures II: Colonoscopy

89
The colon, or large intestine, is the final segment of the digestive system. Its primary functions include absorbing water and vitamins produced by gut bacteria and transforming waste from liquid to solid to form stool. In adults, the large intestine is approximately 5 feet long and consists of four main sections:

Inflammatory Bowel Disease V: Surgical Management

145
Surgical interventions for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which includes ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, are essential in managing symptoms and addressing complications. The selection of surgical procedures is contingent upon the specific conditions and complications that stem from these illnesses.
Here are some common surgical interventions for IBD:

Chronic Bowel Disorders: Introduction

445
Chronic bowel diseases are a group of long-term conditions affecting the digestive tract, characterized by inflammation and damage to the gut lining. These conditions primarily include irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a common disorder affecting the gastrointestinal tract. The distinctive feature is recurrent abdominal pain associated with altered bowel movements, manifesting as constipation, diarrhea, or fluctuating between both. The...

Inflammatory Bowel Disease I: Ulcerative Colitis

166
Introduction
Inflammatory bowel disease, or IBD, encompasses a group of disorders characterized by chronic inflammation or ulceration of the gastrointestinal tract.
Risk Factors
The exact cause of IBD remains unclear, although it is believed to be due to a mix of genetic, environmental, microbial, and immune factors. Genetic factors are significant in determining susceptibility to IBD, with family history being a critical risk factor. Individuals with a first-degree relative who has IBD are at...

Irritable Bowel Syndrome II: Clinical Features and Diagnostic Evaluation
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is classified into subtypes based on the predominant bowel habits as determined by the Bristol Stool Form Scale (BSFS). The subtypes are:

Area of Science:

  • Veterinary Medicine
  • Gastroenterology
  • Comparative Pathology

Background:

  • Shortening of the colon in cats is a recognized condition.
  • Its imaging and clinicopathological features are not well understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the signalment, clinical presentation, imaging, endoscopic, and histological features of short colon syndrome in cats.

Main Methods:

  • A multi-institutional, retrospective case series.
  • Ninety-three cats diagnosed with short colon via ultrasonography, CT, endoscopy, or autopsy were included.

Main Results:

  • The median age at diagnosis was 12 years.
  • Diarrhea (65%), vomiting (39%), and weight loss (39%) were common signs.
  • Lymphoplasmacytic colitis was found in most cats, with concurrent enteritis or small cell lymphoma in some.

Conclusions:

  • Lymphoplasmacytic colitis is frequently observed in cats with short colon.
  • This suggests a potential association between these conditions.
