T cells with receptors for IgD.

    Summary

Immunoglobulin D (IgD) enhances antibody responses by increasing T delta cells. These T cells, identified by their IgD receptors, play a crucial role in the adaptive immune system.

    Area of Science:

    • Immunology
    • Molecular and Cellular Biology

    Background:

    • The precise function of Immunoglobulin D (IgD) in immune responses remains unclear, despite its surface prevalence suggesting a receptor role.
    • Previous studies indicated that IgD administration enhances antibody production in euthymic mice, a phenomenon transferable via T cells.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the immunoregulatory role of IgD and identify specific T cell populations involved.
    • To elucidate the mechanism by which IgD influences adaptive immunity.

    Main Methods:

    • Administration of IgD to mice (in vivo) and cell cultures (in vitro).
    • Analysis of T cell populations, specifically T delta cells, in spleen, lymph nodes, and thymus.
    • Phenotypic characterization of T delta cells using Lyt markers.

    Main Results:

    • Demonstrated the existence of T cells expressing receptors for IgD (T delta cells).
    • Showed that IgD exposure significantly increases the number of T delta cells in peripheral lymphoid organs.
    • Correlated the kinetics of T delta cell appearance with the immunoenhancing effect of IgD.

    Conclusions:

    • IgD actively participates in immune regulation by modulating T delta cell populations.
    • T delta cells, characterized as Lyt 1+2-, are key mediators of IgD-induced enhancement of antibody responses.
