Asepsis is the practice of preventing or breaking the chain of infection. The nurse employs aseptic techniques to prevent the spread of microorganisms and reduce the risk of diseases. Hand hygiene is the cornerstone of aseptic techniques and is classified into medical and surgical asepsis. Medical asepsis includes hand hygiene and the use of gloves. Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the rate and reasons for antibiotic non-adherence in patients undergoing dermatologic surgery.
  • To evaluate the effectiveness of existing survey questions for screening antibiotic non-adherence in this population.

Main Methods:

  • A multicenter prospective cohort study was conducted across five academic outpatient dermatologic surgery centers in the US.
  • Included were 276 patients aged 18 years or older prescribed antibiotics post-dermatologic surgery.

Main Results:

  • 15.2% of patients (42/276) exhibited non-adherence to their prescribed antibiotic regimen.
  • The primary reasons for non-adherence were forgotten antibiotics (42.9%) and side effects (28.6%).
  • Screening survey questions showed modest performance (AUC 0.669) in the dermatologic surgery context.

Conclusions:

  • Antibiotic non-adherence is a prevalent issue following skin surgery.
  • Commonly cited reasons for non-adherence are manageable by healthcare providers through patient counseling.
  • Improving adherence strategies is essential for optimizing dermatologic surgery outcomes.
