    Summary

    Antibodies do not protect mice against Cryptococcus neoformans infection. B-cell-deficient mice showed no difference in outcomes compared to normal mice when infected with this fungus.

    Background:

    • Cryptococcus neoformans is a fungal pathogen that can cause serious infections, particularly in immunocompromised individuals.
    • The role of B-cells and antibodies in the host defense against C. neoformans is not fully understood.
    • Understanding protective mechanisms is crucial for developing effective therapeutic strategies.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the role of B-cells and antibodies in the host immune response to experimental Cryptococcus neoformans infection in mice.
    • To determine if antibody production is essential for controlling fungal burden and mortality.

    Main Methods:

    • B-cell deficient mice were generated using rabbit anti-mouse-mu antiserum treatment shortly after birth.
    • Both B-cell deficient and normal control mice were intravenously infected with Cryptococcus neoformans.
    • Mortality, fungal organ burden, delayed-type hypersensitivity reactions, and serum antigen levels were assessed.

    • No significant differences were observed in mortality patterns between B-cell deficient and control mice.
